Best paint for frame?

I have the engine out of my truck, and also the front suspension. I want to get some paint on the frame while I have everything apart, what products have you guys used?

I did the back half of the frame with rustoluem about 6 years ago, and now you can barely tell now.

My highschool autoshop teacher is in the process of building a z28 camaro, and had the car underneath painted. Frame, floor, suspension everything. He used some sort of por 15 product (it was very expensive if I recall) and I'm pretty sure you could take a hammer to that thing and you couldn't scratch it. I'm not kidding. Have a look into it, If I ever had my truck apart like that I guarentee it would be cleaned down and covered in por15. Google it and see if it's something you want.

I've used POR15 on lots of things, but didn't do it on the frame. I have it on the shop crane, engine stand, vise stand, grinder stand, etc. But my paint/body man hasn't used it so is going with epoxy primer and a matte black chassis paint. Says the epoxy primer has a longer time to coat it then POR15, which requires the topcoat to be put on fairly quickly. And, it does need a topcoat or it turns milky white due to the UV.

I used POR-15 on my frame; 63 F100 4x4. It's all about the prep and they sell a complete 'kit' to do it right. My frame came out great and seems like it will stand up to a nuclear blast!

I've looked at por-15 online, seems like the way to go, where is the best place to buy it from? I haven't really looked at prices yet, is it about the same price everywhere, or is it cheaper at one site than another?

I like POR15 too. I have not painted my frame, but I used it for a lot of stuff (painted my wrought-iron patio set and shop equipment, such). I like to spray it if the job requires more than a quart. It's faster and will get in all the right places. So I buy the POR and get two cheap paint sprayers (harbor freight grade) for an extra $20. IMO it too hard to clean up spray guns after using POR so I just throw them away at the end of the job.

POR-15 is the way to go! Look around online, you should find a decent price. In my experience with POR-15, it's a good idea to get a few empty paint cans from lowes just in case, (even when the can is new)sometimes the lid is a PITA to remove and you end up destroying the lid trying to take it off. I also buy it in quarts because once it's open it has a limited shelf life of 6 months. Oh yeah, don't get any paint in the groove of the can and put the lid on, you'll need dynamite to get the lid off!

So true I always put a piece of saran wrap over the can then put the lid back on.

POR-15 or Eastwood, both are great products.

Pour the POR out into another container rather than paint out of the original can. And don't use Styrofoam cups as it'll eat right through. And a plastic cup will soften with it. Oh, and don't use cheap foam brushes.

Thanks for the tips!! How much do you think it will take to cover the frame from the front to where the radius arms bolt to the frame? Looks like it's about $47 a quart!!

It goes a long, long way. But it is easy to skip spots, so they recommend two coats. Given that you might be able to do that with one quart, but two would be safer.

And remember to do the prep correctly. In fact, POR15 adheres best to light rust.

I just ordered 2 quarts of por 15 from Summit, can't wait to see what it will look like. What is the best way to put it on? Seems like a roller would work on the flat spots, or what else?

A roller and a nylon brush. But didn't CB say he uses cheap spray guns?
