i put in a new battery and i touched the postive cable to the neg post or vise-versa,anyway it made a click noise.now the battery lights on.it starts ok and when i rev it up the light goes out.when driving the more rpms the light again goes out.could it be the switch on the wall that clicked?the postive cable hooks up to it.how would be the best way to check for sure?
More than likely when you "REVERSED POLARITY" you burned out the diode bridge in the alternator.
Alternators are EXTREMELY sensitive to CORRECT polarity, ie: + to +, and - to -. Once you burn out the diode bridge you get a slight leakage of AC current out of the Alternator. Remember the alternator creates Alternating, or AC current and then converts this via a rectifier(diode) bridge to DIRECT CURRENT or DC.
'The "switch on the wall" is a starter solenoid and will click if you had the ignition on when you hooked up the battery.
Go down to your local mechanic/parts store and ask them to check the alternator. Replace the alternator if bad and mark your cables and terminals 1st.
you probably fried the doide bridge in the alternator. A new or rebuilt alternator should solve the problem, If rebuilt, I have had good luck with Cardone.
