my problem is I recently purchased the truck and on first "drive", a loud whining sound came from the speedometer...........the speedometer did not work from the beginning................I have disconnected the speedometer..............
the mechanic ( very reputable ) who is going over my engine, transmission and drive train has told me the cable seems to be fine, the noise was coming from the speedometer itself................I want to verify that it is not a cable problem and have received suggestions how I may do this from previous threads...............
I have found a guy in Michigan that repairs speedometers and leaning toward sending it to him...........
I have basic mechanical skills............but the sounds lead me to suspect something has broken inside the speedometer, plus I do not know how long the problem existed before I got the truck.................as it turns out, the person I bought the truck from misrepresented the condition of truck when advertising it, so I have lost confidence in him.................he is in California and I am in ohio...........another life lesson.............you know the old should of, would of, could of..........
thanks for your suggestion..............I may just take the initial step to take a peak inside the speedometer and see ................
Could be something as simple as the inter cable cut too short and not fully engaging the speedometer head. Far easier to determine where the problem lies than to pull the head not knowing. Over the many years I've played with this old junk, I've found more cable problems than head problems.
Most common failure is with the cable. Pull the cable lose from the speedometer head. The inner cable comes out from the speedometer head end. Inner cable replacements are available at about any parts store. Make sure the cable housing is good. Very common for them to get damaged by the unknowing and by rust.
Today I replaced the inner cable, and I now have a functioning speedometer. It does read slow, (at least according to my gps) but I expected that since I have no idea what gear ratio PO installed with the 9" rear.
I think I may have crimped the cable a little long though. If I tighten down the connection, the cable gets bound and wont turn the speedo.
If worse comes to worser, I sent my speedometer to Scott's Speedometer, Pontiac, MI for repairs & odometer zeroing. The odometer zeroing come's in handy to keep tabs on how many miles are on the rebuilt 226. $200 though.

Reason: Adding information
When you get your speedo back just remember that tire size will play a role in accuracy if you are comparing it to GPS calculated speed. Sorry if I'm being "Captain Obvious".
