A/C Compressor cutting off and on?

A/C Compressor cutting off and on?

My A/C compressor is cutting on and off in 2 second increments. No cool air comes out and it causes the truck to idle rough and lose tons of power on acceleration. Does it need a recharge or is the compressor busted? 1994 F150 5.0 XLT

mine did the same, except for the rough idle and loss of acceleration. AC needed to be recharged. Be sure you have no leaks before filling. I had the schraeder valves replaced before filling.

Perhaps you have more than one issue, AC and something else. When was the last time AC was working? Did all problems occur at same time?

Truck was sitting in storage since 2005 until I picked it up in November so I'm not sure if was working that long ago. Truck runs fine with it off and it has no other problems that I know of, but when I turn the A/C on, it loses so much power that it struggles to go up hill and it gets a CEL.

have a competent AC guy evacuate, if necessary, change out schraeder valves, and fill with Freon, R12... the good stuff!!

First thing,

Can you easily turn the compressor clutch by hand? If not, then chances are it's binding up when the clutch engages and therefore turns the crank inside the compressor housing. If you say it's bogging the engine down and thus producing the CEL light, I would either check with the belt off if you can turn the pulley assembly easy without any slop. If you can, then don't try to use the AC until you isolate the bind. I betting the compressor trying to lock up inside. If it does, then you could risk shredding the belt if it gets stuck with clutch engaged.

Yes, 2 second intervals indicate low charge, but it shouldn't bog the engine, create havoc, or produce the CEL.

Also, '94 is the breakout year for R134a. It should have R134a. If you know a guy with AC credentials, he could flush the entire system and charge with R12, but he would also have to adjust the low side pressure switch and account for differences with condenser and such.
