I learned on a 56 Studebaker pickup with a three on the tree. From there a 60 Buick Skylark eventually replaced by a 69 Pontiac LeMans. I forget what all after that.
What I'm saying is that I wouldn't go back to those old clunkers that I once thought so highly of. Airbags, seatbelts, disk-brakes, ABS brakes, traction and roll over controls, better tires, etc. All have greatly enhanced the safety of auto's.
These items not only help you but they help the innocent folks that you might otherwise collide into.
I've been driving vehicles of all kinds (up to 80,000 lbs) with and without ABS and have not rear ended anyone since I was in high school back in the 70's. So to say that I'm somehow taking my life and other's lives into my hands by doing so is pure foolishness. My life is more endangered (daily) by those who are driving a vehicle with ABS and rely on that feature to compensate for their poor driving habits. And I've driven somewhere upwards of 4 million miles since I started. The first ABS equipped trailer I pulled was downright dangerous when the ABS engaged while the trailer was empty. Ever seen a semi trailer go airborne ? Hopping down the road while the brakes were applied ? It's not half as funny as it looks. The trailer I pull now, the ABS works about half the the time and I'd just as soon that it didn't work at all. It adds zero to the stopping ability of the brakes.
It's already been acknowledged that you have far superior driving skills; Keep up the good work.
But back to my point, most drivers (like myself) would like to be informed prior to any potential vehicle purchase if the factory installed safety equipment have been bypassed or disabled in any way.
