All Idi starters are gear reduction. they use planetary gears, if your starter grinds, it may be your ring gear, is the problem. these engines stop at one of four places most of the time, and will ware at these places.
actually, that is not true. the first year or two ford used a direct drive starter on the IDI, and some people used the direct drive when replacing a burned out gear reduction unit back in the good old days because the direct drive was cheaper.

I've looked at the ring gear, nor did it ever grind with the old starter.
The planetary gear reduction starters do look like direct drive starters, I made that wrong call myself when I first saw one.
However, Tom is correct in that the first couple of years of the IDI a direct drive was used, it's a bulky Delco unit.
As a matter of fact, I just looked it up at Rockauto and they are still available and the part number confirms that it was only used for 1983 and 1984:
ACDELCO Part # 3361815 {#19136124} Professional||Remanufactured
DELCO; 25MT; Unit MFR DE; kW Rating 3.6; Drive Direct Drive; 336-1815; 6Y2; 0050A
I got the DB SND0027, it has an extra plug on the side, a flat tab with a screw shielded in rectangular plastic. What is the purpose of this connection? Been looking on the DB website, can't find it and it came without instructions.
My thought of course is that this is it's own solenoid, if so I need to do a little extra wiring. It's a large connection to however so I'll need to know the draw.
That's just the solenoid wire from the ignition switch. It goes in exactly like the OE except that the big battery positive wire will need to be bent 90 degrees to go on.
It's very easy, and they work VERY well. I just got a third on for my buddy's f450. They are so much faster turning that they start like a direct injected engine. Quality internally appears as good as any other starter. They look like a monster Toyota starter- nippon denso style.
I don't think I'll ever run a stock one again. No comparison, WAY better IMO.

Battery cable to big post, solenoid wire to this tab?
I think I had a brain mishap, that's how it's wired stock. For some reason I thought it was a one wire like the gassers. I just put a starter on a 5.0 so I have an excuse, lol.
It's in, think it safe to say that it spins faster, hard to say, it does sound different, of course no grinding, and my truck always starts quick. Maybe tomorrow I'll try it before the glow and see what it does.
Got to thinking from the looks of the start wire plug there is probably some factory plug for that, anyone know if there is and if so where to get it?
