Help I Cannot get fault codes!

Hello all New to the fourm, Not to Ford Trucks. I have a 1993 F150, 4.9-I6 that started running rough at idle and stalls when pedal is pushed down. Now my question has any one ever not been able to get the self test codes to work? I have jumpered and used a meter and a test light, then went and got a code reader and it will not start the test either. This is very agravating. Any help or at least someone that has seen this would be Great, I have started checking every sensor with a meter but that is a pain. Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like computer death syndrome. Pull it out and look for leaking capacitors. Look very close, maybe even get a magnifying glass.

Clean the pins on the data link with contact cleaner. Sometimes a small file works well too.

If it is a manual transmission, be sure to hold the clutch pedal on the floor. I'm not sure why, but this has to be done on 4.9 engines.

Connect / disconnect that code reader multiple times to clean your under-the-hood connectors. That "abrasive" action should clean up those contacts --- if not, you'll have to de-energize, degrease, then use an acidic cleaner (vinegar, coke) followed by a neutralizer (baking soda) in distilled water to clean up the contacts.......the "canned" cleaners (e.g. CRC Electronic Cleaner) don't cut it................

I know about the clutch I have made sure that it is pushed all the way down, the data link is a spade connector type and I made sure that they were geting a good connection. This all just started on the way to town last week I dont drive the truck that much just on the weekends and to pull the boat to the lake (the most important thing!) If it were a computer problem would the truck still run? All of my mechanical knowledge is old school vehicles 1979 and back so I have to look up everything in the hanes manual that has to do with the things that the computer controls. Thanks for the replys. I will take the EEC out and inspect it.

Yes it will sometimes.
It does sound like a bad computer.

Also something to look for on the printed circuit board will be anything that suggests that a component has created excessive heat. Look at the solder side, anything burnt, loose, smells burnt, take the ECM/EEC to the parts store and get a new one. While the EEC is disconnected is a good time to check the wiring from the STI connection s to the EEC.
