I currently drive a 99 5.4 f-150, but I'm looking to buy a 79 f-100 with the 351 Cleveland. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of this model truck? The one I'm looking at is an automatic 2x4.
The major con will be the gas milage. Gas milage is not great on these trucks. I don't believe these trucks came with the 351 Cleveland. It'll be a tad more difficult to find one with that particular engine. Unless you already have one in line then great! Or you're talking about a 351 Modified. Some pros will be the level of "coolness" these trucks are beyond cool looking! They do turn heads. If taken care of they are extremely reliable!!
It's actually my great grandpa that is selling the truck. He said that the engine was a 351 Cleveland. I personally haven't driven up and looked at the truck in detail yet. But he said it runs and drives fine, no rust, and he only wants $1700. I've always loved the way these trucks looked, i just wanted to get some more information on them before I go buy it. But bad gas mileage is something I'm used to. i get 12-14 in my current truck.
$1700 is a good deal if it's what he says it is. The fact that it's already in the family is a plus. And yes, it won't be a 351 Cleveland. Those were only put in cars through '74. A lot of people think they have a 351 Cleveland when it's in fact a 351M. And it's very uncommon to swap a 351 Cleveland into these trucks.
If you:
1) Want a rough-and-ready reliable work vehicle, and
2) Have the financial means to support this hobby, and
3) Already have the knowledge and experience, OR are willing to put in the honest time and effort to learn,
Oh okay, that makes sense. I definitely need a good work truck, i have enough to spend what I need to, and i know enough about cars and trucks in general to figure out most things. I really want a 4x4 though, would it be worth it to turn this one into a four wheel drive? Or just look for a different one that is 4x4?
