I've read so many posts about this my eyes are ready to bleed. I've got a 77 f150 4wd,with a 4 speed tranny. I just rebuilt a 400 engine that I'm ready to drop in, except I can't find a pressure plate that matches the hole pattern on my flywheel. The flywheel is off another 400 engine I picked up from a friend. But every clutch kit I've ordered from the parts store has been wrong.
There a 2 separate sets of casting numbers on my flywheel. The first is d7te 6380 dc. The second set is stamped into the outer edge and it is d7te-de.
I've ordered both an 11" clutch set and also a 12" and neither set will match up. The old pressure plate is a borg&beck with a model number I can't hardly make out. The bolt hole spacing on it is 6 1/4" center to center.
Before anybody asks the obvious I can't use my original flywheel because its for a 351 Cleveland.
So which set of numbers do I go by? I'm completely stuck now, please help!
Not sure that you have the right flywheel. According to the Ford parts catalog the flywheel for the 400 is p/n D7TZ-6375-D, marked D7TE-CE.
From the illustration in the catalog, it looks like the 351M takes a Borg & Beck style pressure plate and the 400 takes a Long style pressure plate.
The 12" disc is p/n D7TZ-7550-B and pressure plate is D7TZ-7563-B.
Thanks a lot mike!
So that would mean I've probably got a 351M flywheel instead? Since mine is DE.
Which would explain why the clutch kits I've ordered for a 400 flywheel haven't matched up?
I need to use a 351m harmonic balancer with this flywheel too correct??
That will be a problem since all Ive got is 400 and 351C harmonic balancers.
Thanks a lot mike!

According to the parts book the 351M takes flywheel p/n D7TZ-6375-E; marked D7TE-DE and is for an 11" clutch.
EDIT: On the harmonic balancer, the parts catalog shows three different balancers were used but two out of the three show usage on both the 351M and the 400 so I think you'll be good.
Ok, well that's possibly good news on the harmonic balancer. I know the balancer Ive got came with this 400 motor. It was in a 1971 ford ltd with about 40,000 miles original miles on it. My flywheel actually has D7TE-DE stamped on the outer edge of the flywheel. My local parts store ordered 2 more clutch kits for a 351m, so in the morning I'll take my flywheel with me and hope for the best. I'm ready to get my old truck running again.
