Strange No Start

I was driving today and the A/C quit blowing cold. I pulled into make a 10 minute stop came back out and truck wouldn't crank. Acted like batteries were dead and I smelt belt at one point. I suspect A/C compressor had seized since I have heard that causes this problem. I let truck sit for about 20 mins and it cranked up. FICM good, new batteries, only thing I know needs to be done is oil cooler b/c I'm at 30 degrees difference. I don't drive the truck more than 20 miles at a time and never really get over 25 degrees difference. I had to take hour long trip today so I ran the A/C the entire time. I wonder how letting the truck cool off for a while allowed it to crank. I continued my trip. Parked the truck for an hour then went and cranked it up. Weird? After I suspected the A/C I cut it off. Any thoughts? Before I assume it is the compressor I thought about putting gauges on A/C and also removing belt and see how fast it turns over. Wanted to get your guys opinion before I start busting knuckles.....

Can the clutch and pulley be replaced without pulling the compressor?

So I guess I'm looking a having to pull compressor. If I'm going that far where I will need to evac and refill. I guess it's new compressor, receiver/dryer, orifice tube, flush lines, and condenser. This seems to never end.

Since the truck has 188k and I really don't trust just doing compressor without doing accumulator, orifice tube, and condensor. Does anyone think I could have something else going on. Since I bought it has long cranks but not slow turn over.

Long crank at normal speeds is not an ac compressor. It should produce the same crank and start time with no belt installed
