Lug Nuts

Just picked up my 7th. Aero. A 96 XLT with a 4.0 engine. Has 91K original miles. Was owned by, believe it or not, a lady minister who used it to haul people to church on sunday. This was verified when I spoke with her. Anyway, it came with the standard steel wheels and five spoke full covers. Today I picked up a really nice set of alloy rims from wreck in a junkyard. These are Ford rims from another Aero. The wheels were in the back of the van as they have been canabalizing it. No lug nuts were there. Are the lug nuts for these wheels different than those used on the steel wheels?

AEROSTARS FOREVER!!!!!!!!!

As explained to me @ Costco Tire Center, when I switched from OEM Steel Wheels to Mustang Alloys, Steel wheels have a flat face nut, alloys use an acorn face nut. Flat face causes the alloys to wear out, elongate, the holes, Acorn style facing the hub prevents this.

Also in the manual they recommend re torque of the wheel nuts a few hundred miles after install. I have yet to have any problems and I torque mine, Star Pattern, 95-100 foot pounds.

Many aftermarket aluminum wheels have flat faces around the lug holes, so they need a washer between the lug nut and the wheel to prevent gouging. But every Ford aluminum wheel I've used have holes with tapered or chamfered surfaces for the lug nuts to pilot into, just like their steel wheels. (Just like their spark plugs, that don't use washers like everyone else do.)

I believe you are going to want to switch lug nuts from acorn to bulge style. Alloys usually have a wider imprint for the lug nut to settle in.

Bulge style:

Dorman® AutoGrade? 611-154 - Wheel Nut Open Bulge | O'Reilly Auto Parts.

Acorn nut:

Dorman® AutoGrade? 611-027 - Wheel Nut | O'Reilly Auto Parts.

Good point; looks like you can use the bulge type nuts on steel wheels, but you shouldn't use acorn nuts on aluminum wheels.
