What's the hot set up for alternators on our trucks? I got Lincoln Mark VIII electric fans and an electric onboard air compressor and need to upgrade. What's the difference in 1g, 2g, 3g alts? One wire hook up seems to be the way to go but a lot of people like externally regulated. Thanks in advance!

Go to last update of the the tech info hyperlink sticky and for links all about the 3G alternator upgrade. Some have done the retrofit for less than $25.
Awesome, thanks! I guess I should have used "3g" for a key word instead of "alternator upgrade"
If ya got questions, look there first because that sticky contains the best of the best overviews and how-tos authored by fellow FTE and Fordification participants.
Ok, guys. Couple of questions about the 3G upgrade. I'm getting my alternator and harness off of a 96 sable Monday. I'm putting on my 79 f250. I read the tech sticky but still need some guidance. As far as the yellow/white coming from the "a" terminal on the back of the alternator goes, it has been said that instead of going all the way to the starter solenoid you can jump over to the B plus side on the back of the alternator. Is this for sure ok to do, or does it need to hook in between the 175amp mega fuse and the starter solenoid? The other question is about the green/red "exciter" wire. This tells the alternator to charge. I get that, but what tells the wire to tell the alternator to charge? Does it just read voltage of battery? Thanks!
Im not home right now, but going off memory, I just looped the yellow wire with a ring terminal on the end and hooked the green wires together. It was simple, but hopefully someone else will reply with more specific details to answer your question
