86 ford ranger fuel pump shuts off when engine gets hot
86 ford ranger .shut down when engine gets hot .you can hear fuel pump on rail of truck whine .shuts down ,will not crank until engine compartment cools off. changed fuel pump on rail twice , ignition module twice, distribitor , roter , distribitor cap, coil, computer, alternator, some sensors etc.. new spark plugs and wires. I thought changing the ignition module would fix the problem. after 3months it has started all over again. Iam stumped ! I was told it might be temperature sender switch? my manual has nothing about that.

86 ford ranger fuel pump shuts off when engine gets hot
{yes} when i put new module on yesterday{ friday}. I was sure to get plenty on it. The guy at the auto parts store told me. His brother changed one out 7 times before he got a good one!Sorensen parts.I drove it 40 miles highway, got to destination shut off truck. stayed 5minutes truck would not crank up ,could not hear fuel pumps come on .Opened hood so engine compartment could cool off .Once that happened ,the fuel pump primed up, and cranked. What ever the problem is ,it has something to do with heat. At a lost and extremly frustrated.

86 ford ranger fuel pump shuts off when engine gets hot
"hey " would the fuel pump not have power to it ,since it has shut down and not priming up ?. I just let truck sit idle till it got good and hot ,hot, hot.and it shut down . I could hear the fuel pump on the rail whine until it shut down . And would not crank up, turn over but that is all. I can go outside after engine cools off and it will start. ignition module was changed in febuary . changed it out again yesterday. I drove it 5 months without doing this problem. now it's back to the same ole crap. I think it has to do with heat. but what do i know been working on this truck for awhile, and still having the same problem. does any one know about temperature sender switch? location etc.. frustrated.

I don't know where the temp sender is - I don't think you've even told us what engine you have. But it doesn't shut the engine down anyway, so don't worry about it.
The computer turns the FP off if the engine dies, so it's no surprise that it stopped whining when the engine quit. The important thing is: did the FP stop & the engine sputtered to a stop, OR did the engine stop and THEN the FP stopped?
If you cycle the key (even when the truck won't run), the FP should come on for ~1sec. Find out if it's doing that, or even getting power when you do cycle the key to RUN.

ok 2.3L engine 4cylinder manual tranmission . okay when this problem occurs the FP on rail whines. it acts like it is starving for gas. i can press gas pedal starving for gas , may back fire then engine stops.... i turn ignition over , sometimes fuel pump in gas tank comes on,other times not ,but always the [HP FUEL PUMP]. never comes on. turn key over, engine turns over but will not start. and will not start till it has sat there for 15-20 minutes or till egine has cooled down. once it has cooled down the pump on rail will prime up and will crank. about a year ago i took to to repair shop they said electonic contol was bad they changed that and a few other items and charged me 500 od dollars. and didnot fix the problem! ........................ so i started working on it myself and all the things i changed that seemed to make a difference was the ignition module . hey could it be a relay going bad ,goes out when it gets hot? i just donot know i was trying to figure it out my self, just didnot want to take to another mechanic and get riped off. i think it has to do with something that keeps gas going to fuel pump.?? Any way THANKS so much for replying and anything you have to suggest ONCE AGAIN THANKS. THANKS .

If one of the fuel pumps doesn't come on when you cycle the key, then it's either bad or it has an electrical fault in the circuit. You have to find out if the HP pump gets 12V when you cycle the key. If it DOES get 12V but DOESN'T come on, it's bad.

thanks steve83 . i will check that . frustrated .so if does have 12volts and still will not prime up , does that mean the pump in tank is bad? just guessing. earlier today it stalled out on me and the hp pump came on, but would not prime up until 10 min, later.hey steve83 when it stop on me earier i took off sprark plug wire stuck screwdriver in it to see if i was getting spark would that tell me if ignition module working?
