HP Fuel Injectors

I have read that the standard FI's on my 86 5.0 are "19"s. I am guessing that means they are 19 PPH? My question is - is there a simple way to upgrade to say 22 or 25 or would that be a waste of money? There seams to be a wealth of 302 mustang parts out there I just don't want to be spinning my wheels when all want is to hold the speed limit pulling my boat.

The only way a larger injector would help is if the engine and computer were modified, and the original injector was staying on 100% and not supplying enough fuel.

Your truck is speed density, that means all the original components have been factored into the programming of the computer, and that's what it expects to see and be able to use. Larger injectors will just cause the computer to have to try and re-adjust itself, and it may cause a rough/rich idle if the computer can't control them well enough.

SD systems are not very forgiving to alterations. In any case, my '92 is speed density, 302, 19pph injectors. I pulled them once, found all the pintle caps cracked and broken, and saw how much new ones cost. I opted to rebuild mine for ~$15 total, that made a heck of a difference. The built-in filters looked terrible on mine. Another option you may look at are EV1 DRI style injectors. I believe it was the newer 4.6 Crown Vics that are easy to find the 19# variety. Basically the same thing except they have 3 or 4 holes in the bottom instead of one valve, which provides a conical fuel spray and more efficient fuel atomization. I don't have personal experience with these, but I'd imagine they'd be a small upgrade over stock. And being 19pph also, the computer has no problem accepting them.

About the only upgrade for you on SD is to put the later injectors in with the 4 hole spray pattern vs the old three. They can be found in latemodel 4.0 and 5.0 exploders easily in most yards, I bought a set off of sleezebay for ~45 bucks cleaned and new caps/o-rings. Not a huge gain, more of an efficiency thing. Your biggest issue is the heads on the 86 were some of the most restrictive that Ford ever made. You could bolt on a set of E7TE heads and instantly make more power, even better if you work em, porting, etc. Later heads, decent truck based cam (computer compatible) and a set of gears would be the best bang for the buck.

So you want to take a fully functional truck that is fully able to hold your boat at speed limit, and then change the fuel injectors it took dozens of engineers to determine the correct size and flow, match it to your ecu, and test them repeatedly before installing them in you truck that has been working probably non stop since 1980's?

What is wrong with you? If you want speed, mash the gas pedal more. If you want power, mash the gas pedal more.

Must you always be an *** with the same insulting reply to everyone that asks a question about changing something from factory layout/deployment? Not everyone has ill intentions, many are just uniformed and that's why they are asking the questions. It's not the way to create/keep the environment that we try to cultivate around here. Many of us are free thinkers and like to go outside the box.

I didn't insult anyone. I accept your warning.

My point in these threads is not so much for thread starters, it is a serious warning to the people who may be reading these forums and might believe that "upgraded" injectors are somehow going to "double their hp". AKA the "2fast2furios" idiot like paul walker who end up wrapped around telephone poles. Altering stock injectors will do nothing but hurt fuel economy and fail emissions tests.

The number one cause of injury/deaths in America is car accidents, List of motor vehicle deaths in U.S. by year - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . If I can save one life or one car by speaking out harshly against people "trying to alter" their cars to go "faster", then I think it is worth it.

I just want everyone to appreciate their perfectly good working cars, and stop with this "need more hp, can i (swap out perfectly working component from the factory) <swap perfectly="" functional="" component="" from="" factory="">". I think swaping out some of these parts are actually illegal in federal emissions laws. I hope you won't ban me for being harsh/critical of people asking so casually about these sorts of things.

Please forgive me, but remember our cars and trucks have worked a long long time because every part was carefully thought out from the manufacturer. Let us appreciate our cars and trucks, and be happy when they work correctly.</swap>
