Timing chain cover

Is it absolutely necessary to remove the valve covers to get the timing cover off the front of the engine? I am disassembling mine now and it looks like ti can be removed to get to the timing chain tensioners without removing the valve covers. Just wondering.. not sure it would be wise to shortcut this job. If I found broken tensioners and guides then maybe could just fix them and see if it goes.

You can take one valve cover off and remove the timing cover. Take a razor blade and cut the silicone on the other side so you don't rip the gasket pulling the cover off. The blade goes between the valve cover and timing cover. Before you put the timing cover back on cut the two tabs sticking up on the oil pan gasket or they will be in the way getting the timing cover back on and you risk rolling the valve cover gasket.

Great. Thank you. I want to get a look at the timing chains before I spend all the time on the valve cover. I'll try this but I think I should get the valve covers off anyway since I am here and don't really know all the problems I have.

The dealer trouble shoot print out showed besides the codes something about the phazers were not reporting properly? I have to check the print out.
