Started having fuel and temp gauge problems a while back and replaced the constant voltage regulator which seemed to fix the gauge problems but had no dash lights. Replaced the printed circuit board for the instrument panel this past weekend and everything seemed good. Gauges and idiot lights working ok and dashlights working so I can see the speedo at night.
Today driving it to work the gauges would not work and I honestly can't say if the alternator and oil pressure lights came on before I started it up. I was not about to run blind so I headed back to the house and parked it for the day. When I got home this evening I reached under the dash to make sure the plug was firmly seated into the panel/circuit board. No play at all and it seemed secure. When I turn the ignition on the fuel gauge very slowly moves and finally shows my fuel level.
It has me wondering if the constant voltage regulator I put in is bad or what else I can check on this problem? Kinda scratching my head at this point.
I had those type of things happing a few times and notice my key was not in the run position so turned the key a little to the right and bingo everything was working again.
So this may have been your problem with the ign. key not turned on all the way.
Some yrs later, I replaced the whole key & ignition switch. Never happen after that.
