Transfer Case Problem?
Hi I am new to the forum and admittedly don't know a whole lot about this stuff. My 04 ford explorer has been making a grinding noise that sounds like it is coming from the left drivers side under the hood, which is accompanied by a bucking that happens when I'm around 40 mph and I take my foot off the accelerator. The car bucks when I do this. It doesn't happen ALL the time, and shutting off the car completely normally "fixes" this problem, until it starts up again. My mechanic told me it is a transfer case problem. He says it will be very pricey to fix - between $1200-$1600! I'm looking for second opinions and would love any feed back.

Transfer case is a possibility, but more problems occure with the front wheel bearings, rear wheel bearing, axle differential bearing ... Does the transmission shift o.k. ? You might ask HOW they came to that conclusion. You might jack up each tire 2 inches off the ground and turn it slowly and pry up under the tire to see if there is anything worn or bearing noise.
