7.3 VS 6.0 question

As some of you are aware I have recently discovered that 1 Ex may not cut it for my family vacations. I have decided to address this issue by purchasing another Ex. This will also enable me to start my Cummins swap on my current Ex.

I have looked around and found several options and my question is what is everyone's opinion on a high mileage 7.3 vs. a low(er) mileage 6.0? The 7.3's I'm seeing are generally have twice the miles of the 6.0 (I'm talking 280k vs 140k) but are generally half the price.

I know how strongly people feel towards one engine or another but I would like people's opinions on if a 7.3 with twice the mileage but half the price of a 6.0 is the way to go or not. Thanks guys.

I like my 6.0, it had most of the common problems but fortunately this site offers great advice on alternatives to fixing it better than it was from the factory.

One mans opinion

6.0s fail in predictable ways, and can be really great once a few issues are ironed out.

I intend to swap out the 6.8 in my current Ex for a '96 5.9. Also I forgot to mention price, the 7.3 is around $7k and the 6.0 is around $14k.

I'm not scared of fixing the 6.0 however the whole point of getting this Ex is so that I'll still have one when I'm converting my current one. I guess a big part of what I'm wondering is if the 7.3 is still generally reliable at that mileage

Yes, 245K on mine it is the "million mile motor."

My overview in a previous thread:

Having a 6.0 is like dating a bleach bottle Blonde NFL cheerleader/Stripper, the numbers are very impressive and great to look at but when you need her the most she will "go off the rails" and you spend your weekend at the bail bondsman posting bond, but you're not bored.

Having a 7.3 is like being married to the "hot" (even though she wears glasses) Brunette, librarian. Steady, reliable, no drama, likes children and will clean your fish when you come home.

As a result of this forum I would not be afraid to get a 6.0 just takes a little more maintenance.

The 7.3 is the ultra reliable simpler technology. The 6.0 is technically advanced/complicated engine. With the good people on this forum,
either engine is a good choice. The 6.0 has way more power, 7.3 gets
better mpg.

Thanks for all the thoughts people. As I am looking for something reliable that gets decent mpg until I get my swap done I am gonna go for the 7.3 but it doesn't sound like it'll be too bad if I end up with the 6.0

Completely off topic but I would love to hear your description of the 6.8 V-10 in these terms Mark. Remember, she's low maintenance, super reliable and pulls as good as a 7.3 (well mine does anyway ).

Okay Tom, I'll do it just for you:

The Excursion V-10 is like an Amish lass, fine features yet unrefined (no make-up, only has 2 valves), you are happy to take her home to the parents because she won't embarrass you. Occasionally you will hear her mutter in an indecipherable language, she will gladly help with the barn raising in the morning but dayum she eats like a draught mule.

Tom, the indecipherable language is Middle German when she spits out plugs.

Awesome Mark! Sounds pretty much spot-on, she is a hard working hungry lass, except mines an '05 so more spark plug threads, no spitting here.

I hope Apocalypse does not ask me to write anything about the 5.4L, I might not have any more positive metaphors.

6.0l reliability is far better than its reputation suggests. And, unlike Excursions with any other of the factory engines, you don't need an orange triangle on the back window.

6.0l Excursions FTW!
