Swapping Engine 98f150 4.6
I swapped the engine out of my 98 f150 4.6 v8 4x4..
After taking out the original engine due to warped valves at 200,000km.
I found a parts truck an 02 4.6 v8 4x4 that was compatible..
But there is differences.
02 engine has coil packs over each spark plug where my 98 had two sets of coil packs at the front of the engine-- This will change your wiring harness. The main plug into your truck won't go in, neither will your 2ndary plug..
98 truck was dumb and had brought the oil filter to the front bumper this resulting in leaking hoses. By 2002 they got smart put the filter directly on the engine(in a terrible spot to get at might I add)
You will need to keep the 02 intake with the engine-- The gaskets are different and because of this I would stick with the 02 intake if you can. Throttle bodies are a bit different so I went with the 02.
Here's a huge difference between them-- the knock sensors. The knock sensor of my 98 is a screw in sensor underneath my intake where as the 02 is a donut with a much smaller bolt.
I had to take the knock sensor plug off of my 02 harness and replace it on my 98 harness. There is one wire that is the same color so that is how I matched them up..
I changed a few of the other sensors to the 02 as well. One being my oil pressure one, and my crank shaft one. The 98 clipped into the engine no problem but the weathering was different and I didn't want to run into any trouble in the future.
I am told you *can* get at your top two tranny to engine bolts via extensions and you have to drop your tranny and transfer case to get at them. I just took my intake/throttle body off and I could get a small 1/4in ratchet behind there.
When putting the engine back into the truck I loosed up my tranny/transfer case and slid it back as far as I could. As I lowered my engine I connected it to my tranny which wasn't the smartest thing because then my engine wouldn't fall into my mounts. I am told I should have just dropped engine then brought tranny up and forward into my engine to connect the flex plate bolts n such.
I started the truck once adding in all my fluids and connecting my hoses etc. I do have three sensors on my 98 harness that I can't find where they would "plug into". One being a rectangular grey sensor just above my oil pressure sensor.
And then I have two sensors on my passenger side between my coil pack and my injectors.
There is NO spot for them that I can find.
My engine runs good, idles good, drives good. I do have a check engine light on, and so far I do not have a working temperature gauge.
I am getting it code read this weekend to see what kinda codes it's throwing.
If anyone has any questions feel free to pm me.
