fixed everything i knew a few weeks ago. bad glow plugs, either bad gp relay or controller. in the process i replaced the starter relay also even though it proved it wasn't the problem. drove it several times over 2 days and noticed a transmission line leak. parked it. long story but i am working long hours and my wifes twins were due 2 days ago so i hadn't got around to fixin anything. yesterday i got the cooling line replaced. i went to crank the engine and it crank for 10 seconds and then nothing. no power to starter. i swapped back to the old starter relay and there is no difference. on both of the relays i can jump the relay and it will crank. to me that means bad relay. then i just don't understand what blew the new 1 and then even though the old 1 never cranked the engine how can it be bad too? cornfused! thanks for any help.
Sounds like you're not getting key switch power to the relay to tell it to crank. Adjustable steering column by chance (Pretty regular problem with them)?
Many times in the adjustable column, the part that makes the rod in the column move when you turn the key breaks. Check with a test light that you get power to the relay when you turn the key.
Pull the sleeve over the column off, turn the key to the "ON" position and use and set of pliers to push the rod at the top of the column towards the firewall, if it's the problem it should crank. I've know plenty of folks that this was the problem, and just used pliers to start their truck because of it.
