Your housings would be fine even if they are scared up. Just as long as your wheels dont touch it. The acceptable limit to me would be as long as there is no hole through the housing. The housings are just a cover.

Finally made it back home. I reckon I will call RiffRaff tomorrow and see if I can do a little expedited shipping. 1,200+ is more than I really want to spend putting a reman part on.
Forgot to mention, I can hold the cold wheel and spin the hot wheel! Eeeek!
That sounds like a broken turbine shaft to me. Getting the complete turbocharger is probably a good idea. I hate to think it, but there may be debris in the CAC and CAC tubes too . . .

Yeah I know.... I am goinng to start taking it apart and see what it looks like inside a little later.
You wouldn't be the first one with a broken shaft. It just happens some time. Watching your post. I believe for 1350.oo you can get the 38R new from Riffraff, at least they use to be.
That's a good question. Any evidence of large debris striking the compressor wheel, like chunks missing from it? Is it the stock wheel?
Just took it apart. It's weird. The shaft is definitely snapped. Right where it steps down on the compressor side, it is busted clean in two. The bushings, look great. The wheels have no sign of damage other than where they were spinning after the shaft broke and they rubbed up against the housings. I wonder if it was just a bad shaft or what? The bushings fit tight and spin nicely.
Like I said, I was just cruising down ther road at 70 and it just let go. I am thinking about just cleaning up the housings, getting everything hot tanked and throwing a new turbine shaft, compressor wheel, and bushings in it and see how it works. A lot cheaper than a new turbo. The stamped piece behinde the turbine is a little scarred up from the turbine. Can I buy that separate?
I also just noticed that it looks like there is a ball or roller bearing that supports the compressor side of the shaft that has failed. It would make sense that if that bearing failed that it would allow the shaft to spin wildly and snap the shaft.
The stock unit has no ball or roller bearings. Could it be the thrust bearing collar or plate?
That is probably it. It is right where the compressor wheel would but up against around the shaft.
Here are my thoughts. In my cart on Riff Raff I have:
Garrett GTP 38 Journal Rebuild Kit
Garrett GTP 38 Turbine Shaft/Wheel Assembly
RiffRaff Diesel Billet Compressor Wheel 94-03 - Should I spend the extra $70 on this?
Turbo Re-install kit - Late 99 (not sure on this one, listed for early 99-03, only could pick early or late 99)
EBP Pedestal Actuator Isolator Pigtail - I snapped my connector off the pedestal getting the turbo out.
All this is only $515. I am pretty cetain I can do all this myself....
Think this is a solid plan? The only thing I am concerned about is the stamped plate behinde the turbine wheel, but I am pretty sure I can clean it up with a scotch brite wheel
You're on the right track with that order. The late '99 model includes all turbochargers through end of 7.3 production in '03.
Good deal. You think that compressor wheel is worth the extra coin? The more I think about it, the more I am thinking of ordering the EBPV delete pedestal since mine is already leaking oil and I'm gonna be in there anyway.

I can't speak to the compressor wheel. I have the original early '99 style in mine. I do have the EBPV delete pedestal, though.
