Can help me? My battery isn't being charged by the alternator. Its a new alternator and the battery is still good. When i pop the negative off the battery the engine cuts right out. any suggestions?
"Not charging" - it's worse than that - check for good ground(s) and proper connections... your alternator ain't alternatin'. At all.
Can almost believe two bad alternators in a row these days, but that's probably not the way to bet (hopefully) yet? Have you done anything else to the truck recently?
Truck is running exclusively off battery instead of the charging system for whatever reason. That's why it dies when you remove cable. Remember the battery has only one purpose (basically...) and that's to start the engine. After that the alternator runs everything. Btw this condition will frag your battery right quick, it's important to get it on an outboard charger till you get things sorted out.
Check your voltage regulator. unless you have done the 3G upgrade it will be located on the front crossmember between the radiator and the battery. They are external on these trucks
check with a meter and make sure everything is doing what it is supposed to. The cheap china regulators are very hit or miss on if they will work out of the box. Track the power. find out where it stops and then determine why it stopped.
When all else fails, return alternator and regulator and pull a 3G from the junkyard. One of the best mods you can do to these trucks. (Or any old ford)
after some research and wire chasing I found out the wire that runs from the ignition to the voltage regulator had been cut by the previous owner and after reattaching it my issue has been resolved

Taking the battery cables off a running vehicle as it sits *might* be the same as doing the old hillbilly *generator* test, which can blow out the diodes in your alternator. So, I'd think twice about doing it.
