Depends on what you've got running electrically. I've a Optima red top in mine that's been through 2 other vehicles, and has never let me down. My work van hss a Optima yellow top and that is the only battery that doesn't need replacing in that vehicle every 6 months, but I blame that on the ac inverter, GPS, lighter ports with multiple accessory adapters, etc. ~Bill
Absorbed Glass Matt (AMG) batteries, like the Optima, are the "new" technology. IMO I would not recommend using the original/old Flooded Lead Acid battery technology. AGM costs more but they last longer and better withstand rough conditions and vibration (which trucks have plenty of). There are lots of other reasons the AGM is better - google it if you have the time. I installed the Exide brand in my truck. EXIDE® RoadForce® AGM 200
Good luck.
Just looking at what you all recommend as to what type of battery to buy for a 1986 F150 4.9l I6.
Thanks for your help.
I, too, drive a 1986 F150 with 4.9L engine. The originally specified battery is quite small [physical and electrical].
I used an Autocraft Gold 24-F6, sold at Advance Auto Parts. It is rated @ 700 CCA [875 @ 32F]. It is larger, but fits the battery tray. It is wider than the recessed area of the plastic hold-down bar, but works acceptably. The plastic bar rests on top and there is plenty of adjustment with the threaded hold-down rods. The battery is held securely.
Here is a trick: Go online and look for Advance coupons. I ordered the battery online and selected pick-up at the local Advance Auto Parts. The battery was $120 and there was a coupon valued at $40 for any purchase greater than $100. I applied the coupon [online] and the total was $80 plus tax. I changed the battery in the parking lot and turned in the old battery for core.
86 thanks you reminded me of something. I got a larger battery, one for my 94 exploder and put in my truck. Never would have remembered that if you didnt say the stock one was smaller.
