How do you determine what size battery you need? I just bought a '72 and I have no idea when the battery was replaced last but I would like to buy a new one, and I was thinking about one of those optimas. Anyone know which would be the best to use for this truck or how many cranking amps I should use?
You should find out what the factory battery recommendation is, then you can go up from there. A lot of the CCA will depend on where you are located. I think the least amount they offer is 635, if you're in a cold climate, look for the 700 or 820.
Group size 24 is stock. Like Mike said, get lots of CCA's. I prefer Die Hards myself, usually get over 6 years out of them and I've been known to be rough on batteries. Now, Sears’s customer service sucks eggs and they really give you a bad time if you ever try to use the warranty, but the batteries are good stuff.
I am currently running an optima, no probs, like everybody else i like to stuff the biggest battery I can into the battery tray. Especially if you live in cold climes, when its below zero a battery has only about half of its cranking capacity available. And then you have to crank that big block over and hope it fires. Been there, done that, lived in Wisconsin for 30 yrs.
if you live by a les schwabs go get a series 27.. no one of the weenies, get the one for a powerstroke, same size but waaaay more CCA's.. i've had mine for 6 years and it lights up that old FE like nobody's business no matter how cold it is... JMO
Remember some yrs back, when Sears got caught reselling trade-in batteries? Egg on their face. i once went there for a warrantied battery, and before i left, I felt like I stole something from them. Not very friendly, or helpful.
