The indicator on my battery is starting to turn red. It has a motorcraaft battery in it I bought the truck used so I don't know if it is orginal or not is a 01. I usually buy interstate but didn't know if anyone has a brand they like and works good and is cheaper than interstate.
I have had very good results with Duralast batteries from AutoZone. I have had them last as long as four years when I lived in Arizona, which is very good life in that kind of heat.
those indicators are meaningless...replace the battery with either an equal cca or more and buy it from some place that will be around for a while...ive got an optima red top in a van that is over eight years old
I line in a dirty dusty and mostly very hot location. I have lived up in alaska... relatively much colder and cleaner. My experience is that the Maintenance free MotorCraft bat is as good or better then what is usually findable from other suppliers. I always get longer service out of a MC then the others in the hot areas. Up in the cold zone we mostly tended to get heavier CCA rated bats and I have tried all the major brands except Optima. The optima is a very good battery but way over priced. They do not last twice as long but cost easily twice as much.
My dealer down here always seems to have "sales" on the MC bat for my truck in the 50-65 dollar range.
I have a stale of other vehicles and usually I put in the wally world heavy duty Everlast and have had very good luck with them for the last 12 years. In fact the one in my abused sears tractor is over 7 years old and this spring I am getting a new one for her.
I guess my recommendation is to look for best price on a MC unit for the truck and don't be tempted by the hype of the Optima... they would be OK in the 89 dollar range but 119 is too much for what you get.
I have many Optima batterries, one of which is now 11+ years old. They hold a charge for a very long time when not in use. I have them in boats, tractors and two cars. When my OEM batteries go out I replace them with the Optimas. I usually catch them on sale for 90-99 bucks at my local battery interstate dealer.
I have had excellent luck with Motorcraft, 10 yrs out of 1 in my 90-F250, my wife's expedition it is 7yrs so far, although the truck that I have now has an Interstate in it (came with vehicle when I bought it) has been trouble free even in -20 to -25 below zero and that's with out windchill factors and not having the vehicles plugged in either
