Should they be prosecuted?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Sep-02 AT 04:33 PM (EST)]A point to ponder..........

Should these reporters that admitted to sneaking weapons onto airplanes be prosecuted for breaking federal laws? Or are they performing a public service?

Should they be prosecuted?

Prosecuted, anology: If you break into your neighbors house to demonstrate that his alarm system is junk it you might just be right. But you commit a felony to do it. Reporters can't break the law to report on it. Or they can but just like you and I they have to pay the price for a crime. It is a seperate issue from did they perform a public service by doing it.

Should they be prosecuted?

I stand behind the reporter's STING ,as it were.

If there is supposed better security to keep people safe and it ends up that people's lives on board an aircraft are at risk because they DIDN'T do their jobs correctly then I WANT to know about it.

Didn't the people in charge of this LEARN Anything from a year ago.

Should they be prosecuted?

I don't have a opinion either way on this other than did they have to open their big mouths and tell John Q Public. What we don't know probably won't hurt us. And perhaps the proper authorities should have been informed. And now that it was made public don't you think that someone that calls a Camel his best friend going to know that it is possible to gain access as did these reporters.

I agree. I'm sick of the media. The basic idea isn't bad but why not leave it up to law enforcement to test it, undercover? That way they don't have to worry about these situations happening.

Should they be prosecuted?

This is a real thorny issue.

I agree with Wiz that they are not above the law (we wont even go into politics). However I way agree with Dennis that if these guys are incapable of doing their jobs and provide us with some degree of safety, Then I think it should be made public, and made so quickly (i.e. a breaking story, et al...)

At least when the press finds a problem (that they think will sell papers, or more correctly more advertising)we know that every politician will be all over it, trying to show how he/she is such a great guy and how they alone, and without the aid of their superman cape were able to help save all of us from said problem.

No real easy answer here

Drew.

No prosecution. However self-centered or ratings induced their motivations are, the press is still the public's only true defense against a government that will lie, cheat, steal and give us smoke screens and mirrors instead of doing the job they were voted in office for. Yes, the media has made mistakes; but if it wasn't for the media, Vietnam might have lasted a lot longer too. You want to know what government without the checks of a free press is like? Move to Oklahoma City where laws are passed and public money is spent without the population having a vote and the sole newspaper is owned by the most financially powerful person in the state.

In my opinion, a public service would be issuing pilots and flight crew a .45 short and Close Quarters Combat training. And as many of the flight attendants as volunteer for it.

But Joan and John Q. Public don't need to be in the know on it if they go there.

IMHO if it wasn't for the media and a bunch of pansy-*** politicians Vietnam would have been over sooner and our guys would have kicked butt. And no, I wasn't there. Had friends who were. Ain't politics wonderful? Those braying jackasses in congress cost us the war and 50 thousand good young men and the SOBs are still trying to sell us down the road. Our military doesn't have to kiss anyones butt. Our politicians kiss everybodies butt. Look what they're up to now! On 9,11 some gutsy guys on a plane over Pa. said "Let's roll!". Almost a year later a bunch of stuff-shirt, micro-nuts, political leaches are still looking around thinking "What's in it for me?". Freedom of the press? Sure! No problem there. An entire media industry revolving around liberal bias and PC reporting? I don't think so! Freedom involves responsibility. These talking heads are not reporters They are part of a structure in America that is not going to be happy until we are able to be "just like the rest of the world". We aren't! We are better! We are stronger, smarter, richer, and everything else with an "er" on the end of it. The rest of the world can just stay PO'ed if they want to.

Should they be prosecuted?

My vote is to prosecute. The same as if you or I had done it. If I as a concerned citizen did that, I would be prosecuted. No amount of "I did it to point out the glaring inadequacies" excuses would fly. And I should be prosecuted. Vigilantism (sp?)is not tolerated in modern society, no matter how much better of a job we think we can do than the feds. The law is the law and should either be obeyed and upheld for all or repealed and replaced with something better.

Of course not ! I can't believe this is even debateable. If there is somebody who needs to be prosecuted, how about whomever is in charge of the baggage screeners ? Derilection of duty perhaps ? We need more people who are not afaid to exspose incompetance. Prosecuting whistle blowers would only let the problems continue. DF

Should they be prosecuted?

I think their intent was less on improving security than it was to uncover an emotional issue and be the first to break the news.

It's not really news though. In July the Government released a listing of airports which failed to detect prohibited items on the persons or baggage of AUTHORIZED undercover agents.

No, they shouldn't be prosecuted because they weren't caught. Prosecuting them would just play to their agenda.

If they were caught, they should have been prosecuted. The First Amendment doesn't grant the press immunity from the law.

I think the press should report the news, not try to invent it.

Whether you like or dispise the press , without their constant oversight and noisy vigilance the freedom(s) that we enjoy in this country and enumerated very explicitly in our constitution would soon fall by the wayside like a wino who drowned , face-down , in a ditch with 6 inches of water----it doesn't take much to take away what you take for granted.........fd
