How much off MSRP?

I've been doing quite a bit of research on a new truck and I think I've got it down to a Ram 2500 CTD or an F250 PSD - crew cab with short box. Initially I was thinking Ecoboost but I've gravitated beyond that.

How much off MSRP could I expect on the Ford? The Ram dealerships in my area appear to be quite a big more aggressive on discounts and I think I could get around $12k off sticker, which would put me in the mid to upper $30s on a Tradesman level truck.

Any input would be appreciated.

Edit - the F250 would be an XL or XLT trim level, if that matters.

When comparing a Ram and a Ford, you can almost always expect to get a better deal on a Ram. Im not knocking the Ram. Its like that here too. In general you get more off MSRP on the diesels.

Thanks. I guess that fits with what I've been seeing here.

Is there any consensus on what sort of markdown is considered to be a "good deal" on these trucks? Ie, $8k or whatever off MSRP.

unless you get the diesel the markdowns seem to be less for the SD trucks than the F-150's. I got $5k off MSRP when I ordered my 2013 F250 XL with the 6.2.

It used to be Dodge/Ram had very little for rebates but now they are discounting them a lot. It makes me think that they aren't selling as well and they need the bigger rebates to get people in the door. Ford has no trouble selling their heavy duty trucks so the rebates won't be as large. That's my opinion at least.

My only is advice would be find the truck you want, whether it be a Ram or Ford, and work the price down as much as you can. The biggest mistake people make when buying a truck, is falling in love with it before they buy it. It makes it hard to walk away from a bad deal IMO. Best of luck.

If you have figured out exactly what truck you want, find a Costco and go order it from them. You will probably have to work really hard to get a better deal from the dealerships.
That said, there is usually pretty good value in having a good relationship with a dealer, especially when you need them to be your advocate.

Good luck!

I purchased my 2014 last month, ended up with a little under $14K off the sticker price. You just have to bicker with them.

Wow, good deal. It would probably be tough to get that much of a discount on the lower trim levels, but that's impressive nonetheless.

Appreciate all the feedback, guys.

I'd say at least $10k off from what I've seen on the internet. Especially on a 2014 right now. Ordering a 2015 might be different.

I just checked out my local dealer's website since they list the discounted price along with the MSRP and they had one 2015 Lariat CC F35 with the 6.7 and it was discounted $9100 off MSRP. The rest of the 2015 SD's they had were F350 Lariat CC with the 6.2 and they were discounted $7700. Some dealers will drop as little more off the listed discounted price, but some won't.

Best deal right now would be a 2014 since the 2015 are hitting the lots now. Better yet would be to wait until around Oct/Nov when the discounts on 2014's get larger. You might also be able to get a higher trim level(if you want it)for the same price as what a lower one would cost you right now. But then again you might end up not being able to find what you want and have to take "new" stock anyway.

Are you looking at the 6.2 or 6.7 diesel? If diesel, I'd get the '15 with the all new motor. 6.2 I'm pretty sure is a carryover, so I'd get a '14.

I pay a whole lot less attention to what they're asking ... and lots more to what I will end up paying ... and what I get for what I pay. The only way to determine this is to go in and start negotiating once you find the truck you want. Also, be prepared to walk away if you don't think the price is fair.

Engine is essentially the same, different turbo, some upgrades on the fuel system, it makes 440 UP / 860 TRQ now & the exhaust brake. I think the 350's and up have some minor suspension changes. I know a lot of dealerships are offering $10K and up discount in this area on the '15's already.

And....

Increased horsepower and torque necessitates a handful of enhancements for the Ford Power Stroke including: a new torque converter for the 6R140 TorqShift six-speed transmission; improved crankshaft fillet design; increased crankshaft damper weight; new five-layer head gasket; added material to cylinder heads, exhaust manifold and valvetrain; redesigned turbo oil and cooling lines; piston assembly upgrades; and four-layer exhaust manifold gasket.
