Transmission upgrades, HELP!!!!

So it looks like I'm in for some transmission work. Started get codes p0757 and p0766. So I dropped the pan, changed both filters and topped it back up with 9L of ATF. It helped a little but I'm still getting codes p0756 and p0757. No slipping while in gear yet, just hard shifts, hung shifts and late shifts. Luckily for me the warranty I have on it will cover it, so I'll be putting it in the shop to be repaired soon.
But I figured if its going to be pulled out and opened up under warranty I might as well take this opportunity to do some upgrades at the same time, same amount of labor so the warranty will cover it. I will have to buy the extra parts of course.

I was thinking about getting the AFE Power F3 Torque Converter 1200 Stall, and ATS Diesel Performance Billet Input Shaft. Any thing else I should look into? Upgrade the clutch packs? Billet Intermediate Shaft? Billet flexplate? I never upgrade a tranny before so I'm not sure what the "needs" are, and what the "nice to have" are.

I will be running the IDP Xtreme Street tune with either the Atlas 40 or 80 ficm tune.

Any ideas?

Are you "dead set" on upgrading the transmission instead of addressing the two solenoids: B - Overdrive clutch solenoid and Direct clutch solenoid (most common solenoid to fail)?
3C3Z-7J136-BA (SSPC-B)
3C3Z-7J136-AA (SSPC-D)

What fluid are you using?

What has your maintenance history been on fluid and filter changes?

Nooooo, I'd be very happy to change out a couple solenoids instead. The Ex has 180000 miles, I'm the second owner but I've only had her a few months. But given the color of the fluid that came out and the amount of crap that was in the pan, I'd have to say that the previous owner didn't change it very often at all. Also the dealer I bought it from was in another provence and they were supposed to change all the fluids, (engine, tranny, transfer case, and differentials) because of the 3 day drive I had to get it home. The rest of the fluids looked good but I guess they forgot the tranny.
I had the drain done at a dealership and they used Mercon LV not SP. I questioned it, but they insisted that was what they used in all vehicles with
5r110 transmissions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Mark

The LV is fine to use.

Hard to know how much poor maintenance previously is going to affect you.

The solenoids are only $70 each or so (at least in the US) - using on-line parts suppliers.

I have a lot of info about changing the solenoids stored somewhere on my computer, but haven't personally worked on the transmission. Wait a bit and some more experienced folks will jump on this. You could also do some google searches. I bet you can find the procedures.

Even if it is just two solenoids, with 180,000 miles on it, if they're willing to do a complete rebuild under warranty I think I'd take them up on it. My deductible is 100 bucks, cheaper than the solenoids.

I hear you Mike, but I really don't think that the mileage (in this case) should be what drives that decision. The evidence of sub-par maintenance would probably be the clincher for me though. 180k miles isn't really high for the torqshift IMO. Also, is the shop that will do the warranty work really the best one to do the upgrades? I am sure that the upgrades won't be cheap wherever they are done, so it is a matter of getting them done well!

The solenoids are $150+ each, so I may just bring it to the shop and let them rebuild it. The rest of the Ex is in great shape and the engine was completely done about 25000 miles ago at a Ford dealership. I have all the receipts for $10k+ parts he put into this thing. To bad the transmission got over looked. But that seems to be a common thing, most people changes their oil regularly but ask them when was the last time they changed the transmission fluid. No idea.

If you buy them on FordParts.com and select AutoNation White Bear Lake they are around $70 each as I stated.

Edit / correction -

$81 for one and $86 for the other going straight to Autonation.

I would suggest doing a Transmission Re-Learn before jumping to conclusions.

I was reading about the Re-Learn but I didn't have the batteries or anything disconnected. It just starting act weird all of a sudden. Maybe it worth a try but I'm not sure it will even do the up shifts at light, medium and WOT.

Thanks again Mark, I tried Fordparts.com but the prices were much higher then with the link you provided. I'm going the try the re-learn and talk to the guy at the transmission shop and weight out me options.

I have had Torqshift's all of a sudden go nuts even though the batteries etc weren't disconnected.

Re-Learn corrected the issue.

Just something to try before throwing money at it.

You have to CHOOSE a discount parts supplier that gives those good prices when you are on the FordParts.com web site.

Log onto Fordparts.com and select AutoNation White Bear Lake as your default parts supplier. If you do not specifically select them, you will not get discounted parts.

Also, I have not heard of a relear clearing solenoid codes. Not saying it isn't possible, just that it would surprise me. Certainly no harm in doing it though - only upside.
