The NAPA auto parts store I go to has an oil filter display on the counter.
There are three filters with the outer shell removed. There is a Fram PH8A, an AC Delco PF2 and a NAPA Gold 1515.
The Fram is as reported, constructed with cardboard bulkheads and the element has far less pleats than the other two. Both the Delco and the NAPA filters have metal bulkheads and the overall construction looks similar and both appear high quality.
The NAPA is slightly shorter than the Delco, but the main difference is the NAPA has a lot more pleats. So theoreticaly, the NAPA should have more surface area. Then again, maybe the extra length of the Delco makes up for that.
NAPA Gold and Wix are the same filter - either one will work well for you. I have to admit I have used Fram filters because they're available at my local Farm & Fleet store, but I do think the NAPA/Wix filter is a much better unit. I have noticed that the Fram filter I use in my Power Stroke is a lot better than the regular car ones.
As far as motor oil goes, I have used Pennzoil in my gas engines for many years and am extremely satisfied with its performance. I personally would not use 15W-40 in a 302...I'd stick with good old 10W-30, even in the summer.
local walmart sells motorcraft oil filters and that is all i use. As for oil, nothing but castrol or valvoline. I would consider other oil such as chevron or shell but i would not consider pennzoil/quaker state. Too much parafin and engine deposts from using pz and qs. my opinion. the motorcraft filters are made by puralator---motorcraft is just a little cheaper.
Your winters in Colorado may be too cold for running 15W-40. I use it because I have a mixed fleet, everything has over 100,000 miles on it and Southern California has a mild to hot climate. Low oil consumption and exellent oil analysis results have validated my choice, including slightly extended drain intervals using Delo. 10W-30 and normal drain intervals may be the "safe" choice in your case.
