So we bought a used F350 KR, the PO installed a Spectre air system with a new filter, a Spin Tech cat back exhaust, Rancho shocks and a billion watt stereo. It runs fantastic, I kinda think he might have popped in a chip also, how can I tell?
"Chips" are more old school and have faded from use for the most part. Now the PCM is reflashed through the OBDII port. You can still check the PCM to see if an aftermarket chip is plugged into it. You won't likely be able to see because of the cover over the PCM so you have to pull it.
It is located around the ebrake pedal. You have to pull the main connector going to the PCM from the engine compartment. One bolt is holding the plug on.(8mm or 10mm socket) After that plug is removed you can go under the dash, remove the two screws holding the PCM/cover in place and then pull the PCM.
Also if you have access to a handheld tuner that plugs into the OBDII port you MAY be able to see if a chip is installed.
Pulling the PCM really is not difficult and does not take much time. I have done it several times to get the strategy code since the stickers on the body wore off.
