The hood on our 75 sloped to the front. I adjusted the latch making the
hood sit level. However, now it bounces as though the spring is weak
or the bumpers are missing. Wait…what bumpers?
Is a bumper located on the round pad above the latch?
Are you talking about the round landing that's part of the radiator support? That's the landing for the hood spring. The spring helps "pop" the hood once the latch is released. FWIW, I had to get rid of the spring because it kept getting caught.
I've never seen any bumpers on anything I've looked at. My hood moves around a little too on the highway; it's a large piece of sheet metal with lots of room for air to get up underneath at speed. But it stays put driving around town without a spring at all. If yours is moving around that bad, maybe the catch is worn out or the latch isn't engaging all the way.
There should be rubber bumbers on either side of the body where the hood sits, make sure they are there and adjust the hood so it shuts easily but has no play in it
My prefered method of hood latch adjustment is... Remove the hood pop spring, unbolt the latch and latch it to the raised hood. Then I lower the hood carefully with the latch behind the grill, put the bolts in, make sure it's good and centered push the hood down hard and tighten the bolts. Reinstall the spring, and you should be good to go.
