My 1995 F 150 XLT 5.8L with four wheel drive started hard shifting and the speedometer/odometer quit working. The problem appears to be intermittent. Could this be a PCM problem and how would I check it out? It cranks and runs with no apparent problems. And I think I smell what appears to be electronic component overheating.
Your vehicle speed sensor in your rear axle is dead. Without that, you get no speed sensing and your transmission will shift weirdly at best. This should be fixed ASAP as you can kill the transmission by continuing to drive it this way.
The transmission is doing exactly what the PCM is telling it to do when the computer loses one of its major input signals, I'd suggest you pull codes before replacing parts randomly, you could have a dead VSS but it could also be the PSOM or wiring.
Thanks for the info. I'm not driving it until I know it won't make the problem worse. I will check the sensor and sensor circuit and let you know what I find.
I ran the tests and inspections and pulled codes as suggested. Repaired a vacuum line, checked all of the cable harness and all looked good. I did get the 452 code for Vehicle Speed Sensor so I will replace it an see if that fixes the problem. I'll let you know. Thanks for your help!

The VSS rarely goes bad and to top it off the aftermarket versions are inferior and usually cause more issues. Keep the original VSS if at all possible.
Well I'm finally back! Had some problems that kept me away but now back trying to get my truck to work again. bought a new VSS and installed it with no change as you suggested so replaced the original. Now trying to check out all of the wiring to see if there is a visible short or break. I'll be back with tho9se results soon.
I ran the voltage test at the RABS test block and got a smooth and continuous increase up to about 1500RPM when the increase stopped at just above 3 volts DC. Then I pulled the instrument panel and made a visual inspection all of the wiring in the dash. It all looked good. What are the odds that the PSOM or PCM are bad? Is the next step to replace the instrument cluster? Or would you suggest that only the speedometer/PSOM needs replacing?
