transmission speed sensor

94 f-150 5.0 aode Trans goes to in between gears then slambs back in. This usually happens at speed when engine starts to pull again after going down grade. Outside temp seems to have effect on prob. winter =no prob. summer big prob. Pulling boat causes it to happen more often. Has anyone heard of this problem? I think it's the tss. The last time it did this 4-5 times in 5 min I thought I saw the speedo fluctuate 3-4 mph several times.Let me know what you think. thanks Pick-up Man

Welcome to FTE!

You don't have a speed sensor in the transmission. It is located on the top of the rear differential. Read this thread to get some knowledge about the issue. The speedometer has a lot to do with the way the transmission shifts. Therefore if your speedometer is having trouble, you're shifts will be problematic. The result of the problem is that the computer thinks you're going either faster/slower than you really are and trying to shift accordingly.

He doesn't mean the Vehicle Speed Sensor, he means the Transmission Range Sensor. It's a known problem area on Ford automatics. Easily replaced, IIRC not too expensive either.

Thanks for the replys. The vss is on rear axle and I think controls anti-lock function. I have a sensor on the tranny that looks similar to the vss. I thought this was the tss. Isn't the range selectors function to tell com what gear its in. I have priced this at ford $90 two wks ago but didn't buy until I know for sure what to replace. still don't. It's has to be one of the three sensors. Which one?

Have you pulled the codes? They may tell you exactly what the problem is. The sensor on the 4R70W (truck name for the AOD-E) is called the Ouput Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor. It has a Gy/R & a DG/Wh wire in its own connector.

The Transmission Range (TR) sensor is just the new name for the MLPS/NSS, and it IS for reading what gear you want.

The ABS sensor on the rear end not only supplies a VSS signal to the RABS system, but also to the PSOM (speedo), EEC (PCM) for transmission shifting, and cruise control. On Broncos with the overhead console, it's also used to adjust the temperature display.

The reason I brought up the speed sensor in the rear end was because he said his speedo wabbles 3-4 mph.

Will pull codes tomorrow. To late tonight Let you know. BTW. Air-bag and or anti lock warning light flashes a 32 series sometimes when tranny does its thing. Don't know if its related to it or not. Green Top & Bottom White Between

If the sensor on the top of the rear supplies the signal to the speedo, then how come my speedo and everything works great except for the ABS (it is an ABS sensor, so....) with the damn thing UNPLUGGED? makes no sense to me what you guys are talking about then, are you sure about this stuff? the speedo works, the trans shifts (E40D), engine runs great, etc, all with an ABS light on

Unless the truck has been modified, there's no way for the speedo, E4OD/4R70W, cruise, or ABS to work on a '92-96 F-Series or Bronco with the ABS sensor unplugged. Check the wiring diagram or read this.

pulled codes koeo =11=ok....cont mem=334egr valve sensor above closed limit....koer=111=ok...So no codes for tranny prob Now I'm back to round one. Pulled boat 50 mi monday tranny did it's "between gear thing app 20 times. It's really worse pulling a load now than it used to be. I'm getting good at letting off gas before it slams back. Anyway I dropped boat that evening drove back 50 mi with no prob. Was it load or temp? I think both because it will do it maybe once in 100 mi hot with no load. My guess is tss or output shaft sensor. Later

My 94 ford motorhome is doing the same thing. I took it to a tranny shop and they couldnt find anything wrong. Its going to the dealer in a couple days. It only has 16000 miles on it. Does it alot worse towing my boat to. Please keep us informed if you find out whats wrong with yours. Thanks

Guys,
Here's your problems. I've experienced them all and have fixed all of them except one with the help of this site. Thanks Steve, you helped me out big time, it's been awhile since I've checked in here.

I have a 94 F150, 5.0/AODE, 3.73's

My problems were as follows:

My speedo would fluctuate.
My ABS light was on constantly.
My tranny did the come out of gear/slam back in routine.

I replaced my VSS (sensor on rearend) and my ABS light turned off. Problem #1 solved. Part cost $15 at the dealer.

I replaced the MLPS, now called Range Sensor, (sensor on driver side of tranny where gear selector shaft goes into case) and the shifting problem was solved. It has done it twice since I replaced almost a year ago. If the sensor gets moisture in it (I live in South Louisiana, moisture is a way of life) it will act up.
Problem #2 solved. Part cost $95 at the dealer.

I still have the drifting speedo problem, it only affects the cruise control. Cruise control will drift with the speedo. I still have to change the PSOM (speedo) out, If someone has an XLT cluster for a 94 let me know. If not I'll just buy a brand new cluster form the dealer. They are hard to come by in the boneyards down here.

I gaurantee those are your problems, if you want email me jbozzelle(No Email Addresses In Posts!) and I'll go into it further with you.

John
Check the yards in Eunice (A-One Transmission going N out of town) or Lake Charles (Southside on Common, or the truck one off Hwy27 S of Sulphur). They usually have some newer Ford trucks. There are plenty here in Memphis.

Thanks Steve,
If I ever get over there I'll check them out. I'll try to give them a call. Those yards are about 2.5-3 hours away.

There are a few decent ones in north Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge (a U-Pull-It on I-10 and regular one on Hwy 1), and another on I-12 a few miles E of Sherwood Forest Blvd.

Check the classifieds here.
