I don't have any pinging problem with a 925D spring and the factory medium spring, even running the hills with 1000 pounds of weight in the back, with 87 octane. I run NGK UR5 sparkplugs, which are the factory equivalent to an Autolite 24 or Motorcraft ASF-32C
I recently found my distributor has been set up with the 10L arm, which explains why it seemed to need so much initial advance to produce good power (also, the vacuum advance had been removed by the PO)........I'm going to change this, but I might look into the springs too.
