I have a 2wd 1988 f350 12' rack dump. I found an 86 dually 4x4 for sale cheap. How difficult is it to swap the front axle and transfer to make it 4x4? I have a ttb front now. Haven't seen other truck yet so I can't comment on it. But as a concept is it doable?
Tranny is the first problem. The 86 is a 6.9 diesel. my 88 is a modded 351. I know nothing about the 6.9. I thought the diesels had a different c6 than the small blocks. I thought the frames were the same between 2wd and 4wd. Could be wrong. I didn't know if you could swap front end components easily or not.

Trannys are different
86 has a 4 speed (T-19)
88 has C6
You would need small block bell housing to fir the small block. but why not just put a ZF5 in and be down(OD and better fuel milage)
Frames are different because you have coil springs
It depends what you call easy? Do you have torches, welder, drill, grinder, etc? and KNOW how to use them? If so then it is easy. If not, then no. It is not easy

I didn't say you would never find one, just that they seem rare because of demand.
Some members here have been looking for good ones for a while.
I think a lot depends on your area.
If people don't find one locally shipping can really hurt.
Midwest trans wants $2360 plus shipping for a 4wd Windsor pattern. ($500 is core)
It IS the late model -s47 variant.
Whether you need the extra 50 ft lbs rating depends on how built your engine is and how hard you beat on it.
I'm in CT myself. EXTREME north end. A buddy of mine is a mechanic. He has some junkyard sources I might be able to use. My engine isn"t built too much. 351 with a stroker kit. built for torque.
