When taking off from a stop light I mash the pedal to the floor and get this rough rattling feeling coming from under my feet almost like going across a rumble strip on the highway. Does anyone know if this is chatter from the rear drive shaft or what. Truck is lifted 5" with a diablo chip. Happens at both power settings but faster at the 70+ setting. Thanks
Can you see the axle wrap from outside the truck? how can I prevent it other than keeping my foot out of it? Also where do I get a shim for the carrier bearing. My ol man is a machinist (sp?) figure he could make one if I knew how much.
I purchased mine from Skyjacker when I purchased their 6" lift kit. It didn't come with the kit, it was an option. I think it was like $40. They have different shims depending on the lift height. I would think you couls buy their 6" shim and it should solve your problem. Or you can have your dad make one for you. Since your truck is lifted 5 to 6 inches, and if you don't already have a shim in there, you should definitely put one in.
I don't know if you'd be able to see the axle wrap from outside the truck.
you won't see axle wrap, it has something to do with the transfer of torque from the transfer to the rear axle. I beleive there are track bars that help aleviate it somewhat. mine isn't too bad, when starting from a complete stop you can feel a momentary pause before the power transfers to the rear axle...
Ford did supply a shim kit for the carrier bearing. It's part #
E0TZ-4A209-A. All it is a piece of steel .258 of and inch or just over a 1/4 inch thick, 1 1/2 wide and 7 3/4 long. You can have your dad machine you a piece steal and drill the holes to mount between the carrier bearing and mounting plate.
If you go to ford to buy the shim it $32.00 It can be easily made for about 5 bucks in about 1/2 hour.
I had the same shudder and clunk sound when pulling off. I dropped the DS and found nothing wrong until I pulled the slip yoke. No grease!!!! I took regular wheel bearing grease and applied it liberally to the splines and shaft and my clunk went away and very little shudder. I'm going to install the shim.
Also, the pitch between the front drive shaft should be .03 degrees to 3.0 degrees to the rear.
Thanks for the help I will be out doing the greasing thing along with try to fab a shim or shell out the 32 dollars or what ever it is up here after we get done with the week long military training exercise.
