Problem with 2001 GEM
When I put it in gear the automatic door locks do not activate.
the procedure for programming the remote does not work either.
It calls for turning the ignition switch on and off 9 times, and the doors
should unlock, so that procedure does not work either.
I took it to the dealer to have the BCM reprogrammed, they say there is no
BCM in the vehicle. The codes they got says there is a door ajar, and the interior lamp relay DTC. I am not sure what the DTC means, forgot to ask.
The door warning light goes out when the doors are closed, and the interior light goes out. They do not seem to know how the system operates. I bought the wiring diagram.
From what I can see, closed lock switch connects directly to the GEM.
The dealer told me there is two switches in the door. There is only one as far as I can determine. Ther are two plugs on the locking mechanism, on is for the remote lock, it works. So the lock closed switch is also working.
Reading this forum, I see several cases where people have changed the GEM, and that did not fix the problem. I can not see any other solution, as the door closed switch connects directly to the GEM, and the door open warning goes out, and the interior light goes out.
Does any one have any other suggestion?
I bought the 2001 electrical wiring diagrams, but it does not give me information as to how the GEM actually works.
I was able to program extra remotes by turning the key to on and off 9 times, that is in the owners manual. That function is not working now, it was one of the tests that I did. Every circuit traces back to the GEM. But, I can not tell if there are other processors that feed information into it, so am trying to make sure the problem is with the GEM.
The Ford service department where I went, said they would have to investigate further. That is why I bought the wiring diagrams, it is cheaper than letting them see how much time they can take. I went to another dealer and asked about the switches, they said there is two switches in the door. There is only one, and it is working, as the warning light in the dash goes out, and the interior light goes out when the door is closed.
Car Quest, has rebuilt GEMs for $112, so I am just trying to verify if I need to look further, or is that where the problem is.
I was an Industrial Electronic Electrician when I retired, with 50 years in the electrical and electronic fields, and have several university credits in programming, so am pretty well acquainted with electrical problems.
The problem here, is the book does not give enough information as to what the GEM actually does, and there are several other solid state units in the system also.
I am not sure where the codes the service department shows were from. From the GEM or some other device. If they are from the GEM I will replace it.
