My wife's Exlorer is experiencing an issue with the drivers door wiring. When the ignition is off, the door lock switch doesn't work, and the under mirror courtesy light doesn't work. Also, the dinger, dings anytime the key is in the ignition until you start the engine then it quits, and the interior and exterior lights stay on for several minutes rather than 30 seconds or so. Any suggestion of what to look at first?
The first thing to try is spraying some electrical contact cleaner in the door latch and opening and closing the door several times to work the contact cleaner in to the door ajar switch. If that has no effect, then there is probably a broken wire or two in the accordion boot between the driver's door and the cabin. Both of these common issues have been addressed multiple times on this forum. You can search for "door ajar" or I think there's even a sticky on the forum main page for these.
I have dealt with the door switch before, getting a "door ajar" and did the the wd40 thing, so I know that isn't the problem. I was hoping for possible easier solution than tearing into the wiring. Since different systems are effected I suspect it may be a ground issue.
If you have access to a high end/professional scan tool you can access the GEM and DDM to see what sensors/switches thing they are still open and closed to give you an idea where to dig. The "key in" chime sounding sounds like a door ajar issue, but the exit delay light issue (interior and exterior lights remaining on longer than usual and puddle lamp not working) sound like the vehicle thinks the driver's door is not opening.
Do the power locks work with the ignition off if you use the lock switch on the passenger door? How about using the key fob and outside keyless keypad (assuming you have remote keyless entry)?
There could certainly be more than one issue, or more than one wire, that is causing your symptoms. You could try the lock switch, etc. in various door open positions to see if there is a sweet spot where features seem to work reliably, or try the door fully open while manipulating the accordion boot.
Rod, thank you. The key fob and passenger switches work fine. With the door open, I can press on the boot and the outside mirror light will come one and the door lock switch will work, so it appears to be a wire(s). Suspect the singing with the key in may have something to do with the lights on. Never sat inside long enough for the lights to time out. It isn't hurting anything, because once you start the car, everything works, it's just a nuisance. Mainly it bothers the wife so she isn't happy and as we all know that when they aren't happy they like to share it.
