I need help from the experienced and knowledgeable here. Like I stated in an earlier thread I'm doing a 4x4 conversion on my crew. My midship gas tank has to go because it's in the way for the transfer case taking its place. I heard here locally. That a 4x4 midship gas tank is different from the 2wd? Hoping maybe number dummy or mike0o0 would chime in. Or anybody else that has their resources. Thanks.
The parts catalog shows different tanks for 2 vs 4WD.
I'm assuming the crew cab is the '79 F250 in your profile.
It shows different tanks, but it doesn't specify what the differences are.
What the catalog shows is:
78-up F250 crew cab w/ 4WD w/ evap emissions mid-ship 20.2 gal. capacity
D8TZ-9002-K
Same w/o evap emissions 22.5 gal. capacity
D8TZ-9002-J
Same w 2WD w/ evap emissions 20.2 gal capacity
D8TZ-9002-N
Same W/O evap emissions 22.5 gal capacity
D8TZ-9002-P
I ran into the same thing you did, but I have a '74 F350 2wd, 4wd in the future. I have a '73 F250 4x4 parts truck, both are standard cab trucks. The 2wd tank is inside the frame rails and had to be ditched, the 4x4 tank is outside the frame rails but the fuel cap is inside the wheel well. I was going to fab a filler neck from the 4x4 tank to the cap on the side of my bed. I ended up keeping only the rear tank for a few reasons: it's a weekend driver so I don't mind frequent fuel stops, less fuel to get stale, only one sending unit to worry about, and I just got an MSD Atomic fuel injection set up and plan to put the pump inside the tank. It just keeps everything more simple. It's easy enough to add the front tank later if I decide to, I just want to get this thing back on the road! Just thought I'd share some options with you.
