Is there a difference in the side mounted gas tanks for the shortbed and the longbed? I have the opertunity to buy one for $40 out of a 79 F150 4x4 reg cab long bed. It is plastic, so I think it is aftermarket. I need one for my 79 F250 supercab 4x4 shortbed. I can also buy a metal one from a 78 F150 supercab 4x2 shortbed for the same price but it has a lot of rust inside. Is it worth it?
along the same lines as above - SHOULD a front/side tank from a 78 2wd fit a 79 4wd? Is it possible to move back enough to clear the transfer case? As it is now in the 2wd it goes quite a ways under the cab.
Plastic tanks are not aftermarket, they came out in at least 77 on some models. I do not know about teh F150 4X4 tank for sure but the F250 4X4 tank for a regular cab will not fit any other model as it is specific to the F250 4X4 regular cab. I can also tell you that the Super Cab can only use one design front tank whether it is a 4X4 or a 2X4 and that tank is the same as many regular cabs but not all regular cabs use that tank as there are 3 different ones! You need the 19 gallon tank that is really tough to find in good shape for some reason (well, I know one reason, the wreckers forklifts always crush them!). I had to buy a whole truck to get a good front tank for my supercab because the one on my truck is full of shellac (I could have had it boiled but I bought the parts truck and it was a good enough excuse! LOL). Hawkrod
does the metal tank have rust on the inside, if so leave it where it is . there is no way to get the rust out of the tank and you'll constantly be plugging fuel filters. plastic seems the way to go.
is there something wrong with the one you have now, or just like to have spares around?
mine was leaking, and i just took out the tank, wire wheeled around the rust holes and fiberglassed it with the resin and cloth. That was 2 years ago and its still holding in there
