I have a 97 7.3 and the driver side exhaust manifold gasket is leaking and making a ticking noise how hard is it to take off the bolts are rusted probably have never been taken out
There shouldn't be a gasket in there unless it has been off before and someone put one in it. They didn't have gaskets from the factory. Are you sure the ticking is an exhaust leak or an injector you're hearing.

Yeah im sure I can see where it has been leaking its on the back next to the fire wall
Make sure all the bolts are in the manifold. A missing or broken bolt will cause a leak. Check the up pipes too where they go into the collector at the back of the turbo. If they are leaking too, you may as well fix it all at one time.

Do I have to buy a manifold or do they make a gasket for it whats the best route to go
They do make a gasket for it. The bolts will rust in the manifold itself, not in the head. You should probably soak them with parts blaster or something for a couple days before trying to get them out. Still may end up having to cut them. They can be rough to get out.

I'm following along as I have the drivers side rear bolt head broken off...not looking forward to this project as my luck usually takes a turn for the worse

That's the most common one I see break off. I have an engine on a stand in my shop with that one broken off.
I've done two drivers side manifolds. I soaked them for weeks and finally got all the bolts out. Have the machine shop plane off the surface on the manifold, then use a gasket.
The driver side on mine was broke off. There is another bolt towards the centre that has a centering hole so it fits tight on the bolt. It can be a real bugger to get out

Good advice here. I just did them both on an 01, and have done both of mine. Napa sells a good felpro gasket. I had one bolt seized in the manifold. I cut it off with a cutoff wheel right behind the manifold and welded a nut on the stud to remove it.
I might add to my post that my truck is not a daily driver. That's why I took a couple weeks to spray them. As they broke loose I would just spray the frozen ones and then tap them with a hammer. Its a PITA! If yours is a 4by4, you have more room to work.
Random question but my mind works that way
What bolts are they? Special bolts or could you replace the manifold bolts with some better corrosion resistance?
IDK why they wouldn't just be basic metric bolts, but hey i've been wrong before.
