I've been searching for awhile now for a new exhaust system for my 1980 4.9. I want an exhaust that truly shows how tough this engine really is. Any thoughts on what I should get?

I dont know how it would sound on a 4.9 but I know on a worked over 454 magnaflow mufflers (these were 3" inlet/outlet) the engine sounded like it belonged in a late model corvette/camaro.
I would assume if you get the right one it should sound like a late model ford engine tone wise.
I have seriously thought about going this route on my 82 using shorty headers with magnaflow mufflers, but I just dont know how efficient true dual exhaust would be since the driver side pipe would be a good 25% longer in length than the passengerside.

I think a true dual with a crossover of some type would even things out for you. For the 4.9, a good header would be the start. You can run a side by side dual on it too.
Be very careful with a six. It's very easy to put a loud muffler on a six and get the ricer sound out of it, which I personally do not like.
If you do not have inspections in your area, you could try fuel injection exhaust manifolds off a later 4.9. Notice I typed "manifolds", they had two separate ones with two outlets that came together. You could keep them split in two and have a custom exhaust welded up to keep it dual. But that would not pass inspections in my area.
If it were my truck, factory Walker exhaust is what I would have to run.
Stay away from glasspacks on a 6 cylinder. I heard and saw some old chevy pickup with a 6 cylinder running a glasspack go ripping through town one day. I've had better sounding bathroom trips than how that thing sounded! sounded worse than a rice burner 4 banger does!
If you want to hear a good-sounding six watch Cars. Doc Hudson apparently has a split manifold on the Hornet Six and it sounds delightful to me. One scene in particular, the one where he's coming back into town after talking to Lightning out at the dirt track, shows off the unique sound of that arrangement.

You mean they actually went through the trouble of finding the correct cars for the sound effects? I personally think Lightning McQueen's sound was off for a NASCAR vehicle.
I should have been more clear. I agree that Lightning's sound was off. And I don't know if Doc sounds like a Hudson Six, but it does sound like a six with split manifolds. And I like that sound as it reminds me of many cars from my youth.
