My 6.0 diesel V8 doesn't appear to be getting full turbo boost under hard acceleration. There's also a little more black smoke than normal.
What should I be checking first?
How often do you drive it? Could be the VGT vanes rusted to the unison ring, one of the bellows on the y-pipe or up-pipe leaking, or it could be on the pressure side with a torn CAC boot or split hose. You can also pull the EGR valve and clean it to make sure it's not hanging open and bleeding off exhaust pressure.
The truck doesn't get driven very often so you may have a point. It's been to the Ford dealer twice and frankly speaking I don't think they have a clue about this diesel engine.
The reason for me posting this is because I'm sending it back for the third time tomorrow and was hoping I can given them some pointers.
On a test drive the QC guy said "he thought it was fine....what did I think?"...my comments were did you even look at the Turbo Boost gauge to see if it moved?
The Indian workers at the main dealer here in Dubai are more in line to 'Fitters' than they are 'Mechanics' who should know how to trouble shoot...it's very frustrating.
Dubai / Rust - probably not going to happen very often..
Have you checked the air filter to make sure it's not dirty?
Are you getting any boost at all? Does it lag more than usual?
The air filter is brand new this week. A genuine Ford item.
I'm getting a small amount of boost but no where near as much as I used to get. If I put my foot down hard then it seems to want to drive up through the gears without the Turbo coming in to full effect.....it feels like it could rev forever before wanting to change up to the new gear. (It's an Automatic)
Bryan makes a good point about the hoses and boots. Make sure that the heat has not caused any to split/fail.. Your dealership there sounds terrible...
As far as I can see all of the hoses are reinforced/wire bound silicone hoses. I've been round all of them with a screw driver to tighten them up...nothing seemed untoward.
I'm sure this doesn't mean that they will never break/split...but I have asked the dealer to do a more thorougher inspection.
I have very little confidence in their trouble shooting ability...especially on a vehicle that was not sold through the Ford dealership. They do okay on Petrol engines though!
The upper boot on the turbo has a bad habit of splitting on the bottom where you have to remove it to find the tear, and the plastic hose can split at the accordion where it's hidden pretty much under the driver's side battery.
A random issue that absolutely kills boost is the MAF being unplugged or messed up, but that normally throws a code. VGT wiring connector on the turbo (the only wire on it) can crumble if it gets hit with anything, that might not throw a code because there's no sensor on the VGT solenoid to know the actual value versus the commanded.
I have forwarded the first few paragraphs to the service manager here for his review and feedback.
I think the truck will go back to them before the weekend so they can look at some of the points covered. I will will also try to convince the workshop manager to become a member on here maybe?
