weird electric issue

Just bought a 1995 F150, 5.8, e4od, off road package. It was a trade at our dealership and my manager had his rust colored glasses on and I felt he undervalued it so I bought it for $501 ($500 over our cost, though we showed the customer $1k). Shock tower is shot and some non-cab rust but nothing horrible.

The other day I did have an issue I'm hoping to get some ideas on. I started the truck and the brake light and abs light were on. Then as I drove it the transmission seemed to not know when to shift. I stopped the truck and restarted it and it was fine, but I'd like to have an idea what caused this. The only other thing I've noticed is the ignition switch sometimes chimes as though I left the key in even when I haven't. Any thoughts?

I'm wondering if the brake warning light was affecting the lock up torque converter rather than actually affecting the shifting? Any thoughts?

Run the self test see what it will tell you about it and check the brake fluid level. If full of fluid make sure the float in the reservoir is at the top (can stick at bottom) and check the brake fluid level switch make sure its connected its not dirty/corroded. Fluid switch is bottom center of fluid tank, three pins there make sure all of them are clean/tight.

Post results of self test.....and if get nothing more than a "system pass" please say so too.

Read currently clear with 452 in mem... vss or psom error in last 80 cycles. At least that explains the trans symptom but still unsure of cause.

If your speedometer sweeps nice and smooth during acceleration and deceleration and sits steady at speed your VSS is good. From what I can recall from reading other posts you may have electrical issues between the VSS and the PSOM. The RABS (Rear Anti Lock Brake System) also gets information from the VSS so check the continuity from the VSS to the PSOM and the RABS. Others will have more detailed information on how to do the tests but it will give you a place to start looking.
