YOU NEED THAT SPRING IN THE LOWER RADIATOR HOSE!. Some new hoses don't come with them, so you have to pull the old one out of the old hose and stick it in the new hose. If you get a overheating problem going down the highway, it's because you didn't put the spring in the lower hose. At high rpms and temps, the hose gets very flexible and will suck shut and restrict waterflow.
I'm not overly worried. No spring to re-use. Where can I buy a spring? I'll check out the yard if I have to/when I have time.
Don't know about where you can get one. But my V8 doesn't have one in either hose and never has had a cooling problem while in my possession.
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I look at it more like insurance then an absolute necessity. I contacted Dayco, the manufacture of my rad hoses and they said the spring isn't "required" in their design. So, insurance.

Never have I had worse problems than a convoluted lower Dayco hose for my 460.
I cut that thing off and threw it away as soon as I could order in a Gates replacement.
No problems what so ever w/the Dayco Hoses I have on my 4.9. Also, here is what the Dayco Tech, told me about using a hose spring.
No you do not need a spring. We removed the springs in 2000 because if there was blockage in the system, they could possibly suck into the impellers of the Water Pump. If the Coolant system is working properly, the hoses will not collapse.
We no longer offer springs, and do not sell them in our line. I don’t believe anyone is selling them now in Aftermarket hoses. You should be OK with 71038 and 71281 as they are.
Thanks for contacting Dayco,
Roger Richardson

I don't see how the spring could get sucked into the water pump given how it has to be wound up just to get it into the hose.
Yes, it will never be an issue if the radiator is not clogged and there is pressure in the system.
That said, their lower rad hose for a 460 is the flimsiest and most poorly fitting POS I have ever bought.
"Never again"

To each his own. However, the hoses I bought were good quality and fit like they should. None of the hoses I could find/buy new, had a spring in them. Gates, Goodyear, NAPA, etc.
I don't see the lack of a spring to be a big issue if you take care of your cooling system.
In fact I'm sad that my personal experience was not as good as yours.
I use to run a spring in my Mustang Track Car (I think I bought it at Summit Racing). But w/the response from the tech and the fact no one uses them in new hoses (at least for my application), I'll find other stuff to do/talk about LOL
