I am about to change out my IAC valve tomorrow and I noticed that the new replacement valve from NAPA has what appears to be an "adjusting ****" on it. My shop manual makes no reference to this ****. What is the purpose of it and how do I go about setting it up correctly? Thanks!
And here I thought I was on to something greater than sliced bread!
Oh well...hopefully the new valve will solve my fluctating idle and hard-to-start when hot problem.
Do you think the IAC contributes to hard-to-start-when-warm problems? I've had that for awhile (and it isn't injector o-ring leakage 'cause it starts fine after sitting all night), and it sure is a pain cranking it twice to get it to start.
I hope so! I tried to check everything else that was mentioned in previous posts about idle and hard to start problems. No error codes, fuel pressure good at key on engine off or running, cleaned throttle body and tried to clean IAC valve( which gave some improvement - there was some pretty nasty looking stuff that came out with the cleaner), and changed fuel filter just in case. When starting first thing in the morning a tap on the key is all that is needed. After running for a while, and then shutting off I have to crank it for about 30 secs to a minute. When it does start a good puff a black smoke comes out the exhaust (is this from all the fuel from cranking or from not enough air?) When the truck idles, it constantly varies from 750 to 1000 rpm. I'll keep you posted...
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Apr-02 AT 09:30 PM (EST)]Yet another IAC question:
Would there be any reason my truck would drive better around town after cleaning out the IAC valve? If the IAC is for idle only, I can't see why it would, yet the truck seemed to work indescribably 'smoother' today after the cleaning of the IAC internal plastic(?) part. Could just bee the cool weather though.
stevie ray - thanks for the advice on the fuel pressure regulator.
When I changed my IAC valve, idle quality greatly improved, but I was still having the hard to start when warm problem. I checked my fuel pressures again and they were on the low end of the shop manual specs - the pressures did not change from key on engine off or running. I then replaced the regulator and fuel pressures increased and the truck starts and idles like the day I drove it off the lot!
Hey guys I have a couple of questions on this whole IAC please bear with me as I am new to this.
1) on my 93 f150 w. 4.9 throttle body which piece is the IAC in the books it shows the V8's but not the I6?
2)Also what is the best way to clean it right??
The reason I am asking is because this weekend I did the modifications on the air intake with a K&N and a modified airbox and also a restrictor plate on the egr both these have helped out tremedously. Now the idle seems a to have kicked up a bit and from what I have read the IAC is the best bet to try first. ANy input or suggestions at all would be appreciated.
