Hi everyone! I have an '05 Ex with the 6.0L engine. The dealership replaced the oil cooler 2 years ago. But my scanGUAGE II is giving me a temp delta of 30 degrees at 70mph on a flat road without a trailer attached. The engine is in the 215 range, and the coolant is in the 185 range.
I know it's not the coolant, as I replaced the old "ford gold" with good coolant about 6 weeks ago. I added a filter at that time.
I've only had the scanGUAGE II for a cole of days.
Do I need to replace the cooler? Or would it be some other issue?
based on your temps, the engine range is pretty spot on for factory thermostat install. Do you have an oil temp gauge installed? As you probably already know, the oil cooler is one of the weak areas for the 6.0 requiring specific maintenance and flushing routine. The use of anything other than ford coolant and distilled water can lead to failure. Trust me i just went through it!! I tried another brand (very high quality) coolant and sorry now. If you used something other than distilled water, you could be experiencing partial oil cooler clogging due to particulates in your coolant system. Watch your degas bottle closely for any signs of oil contamination. I would accomplish a flush using VC9 and replace the coolant with ford brand and distilled water ASAP. Hopefully you will see a change... the min cost for a do it yourself oil cooler change is well over $500.00....
Also, is your fan cycling more now? If your cooling fan is cycling more during normal operation you might be seeing a fan clutch failure. Pretty easy replace and about $400.00 in parts.
185 seems low for your coolant temperature. You may want to check that sensor. I'd expect to see temperatures around 195-200. I don't have a 6.0 so I can't give you nay real numbers just guesses.
The coolant temp is about right, but the delta of 35 is high. Sounds like oil cooler. That is why I am going to go with the Bulletproof Diesel remote oil cooler, when I can afford it.
I always suggest to people to get an aftermarket (Stant 10238, $5) degas bottle cap. The OEM caps don't hold pressure like they are supposed to. Mine would only hold 9psi when it should be around 16-18 psi.

Good luck.
I just got the Bulletproof Diesel remote oil cooler kit installed, and my temps will stay a steady 195 range. I love the setup, and could not believe how big the new oil filter is compared to stock!
Great advice on the bottle cap, at five bucks, that is cheap insurance in making sure the system is holding pressure like it should!
I'm heading out in holidays in 2 days, towing my 8k trailer into the Rockies. This couldn't have come at a worse time. I won't have time to get a BulletProof cooler shipped here and installed. It will have to wait until I get home.
So at what temps should I be worried? If my oil temp or coolant temps gets too high, I'll pull over and shut it down. But what's the magic number?
I'm not sure what the magic number is. I'm in Florida and I usually see coolant around 185-195 depending on time of year and speed. The oil temp is between 190-205, once again depending on time of year and speed.
I still have the OEM EGR cooler and Oil cooler with the listed upgrades in my signature.
I would change your oil to synthetic type before you head out. I wish we could command the fan on/off. If you post in the 6.0 forum, you should get a good responses.
So it turns out to have been a bad temp sensor. According to the sensor, my EOT got as high as 263. Now since the 6.0 will shut itself down to "limp mode" at 253, I can safely say it is a blown sensor. I'll replace it when I get home.
