Power Steering Issue

My father has a 2006 F250 with the 6.0 Power Stroke. He was leaving a jobsite today and turned the wheels hard to the left to back out. When he went to back out. The steering wheel snapped back to the right violently and now on the ride home he said he had no power steering. Any ideas? I'm thinking the pump went bad. Thanks for any help you can give!

I'd start with checking the fluid level.

Thanks Redford! I checked the fluid level. It was alittle low. But once I topped it off it didn't solve the problem. I have now also noticed that the brake pedal feels alittle soft. The brakes seem to be working fine though. Now I'm wondering if theres a vacuum line that runs to both of them? Any thoughts? Thanks

I don't know about the 2006 year. On my 2001, the steering and brake pump are one in the same. My steering started to "judder" followed by my brakes going soft. I filled the reservoir (ATF fluid is the recommended fluid) and that didn't help. Turned out I had a rusted leaking line that needed replacing. I replaced all four lines ... the pump was fine. Everything works great now.

I checked the lines but they all seem to look fine. I climbed underneath the truck to take a look at the pump. It is greasy, which makes me think the pump may be bad. But if it is I'm not sure why it would effect the firmness of the brake pedal. I'm also curious as to how the pump should be removed. It's tucked in behind all kinds of things!

The power steering and brakes use the same power assist device - the hydro-boost. If there is a problem in this system, it can affect both the steering and brakes. A simple test is to pump the brakes a few times with the engine off and then start the engine with the brake pedal depressed and see if there is some push back on the pedal. If there is, the hydro-boost may be OK. If not, look in the 6.0 forum and search for hydro-boost. Before you add or change fluid, read the owners manual as to the correct fluid. It has changed over the years. Good luck.
