1979 f250 4x4 t19 4 spd with np205. Dana 44 front and Dana 60 rear. I'm getting a pinging, clinking noise/vibration from the transmission and transfer case. Both have been rebuilt. Carrier bearing is new. Ujoints are new. I removed the rear wheels and put it on jack stands.
-1. in Neutral and transfer 2hi the rear wheels turn. Is this normal?!
-2. In 2nd, still 2hi, no noise everything normal.
-3. In 3rd and 4th, 2hi, the noise appears. The rear drive shaft starts vibrating. The FRONT drive shaft and Ujoints start turning. Lockouts are in free position.
Any ideas what's going on here? I'm still learning things on my truck so please bear with me.

I would say yes, you will have some drag from the heavy oil in the transmission that will cause the wheels to turn if they have nothing holding them.

This is a problem. If you say the carrier bearing and u-joints are new then check the slip yoke and spline, with a lot of miles and/or low maintenance these can wear enough to cause a loose fit and it will wobble. I've had to replace them on my truck, but in my case they had over 500,000 miles with regular maintenance.
Transmission shop put my truck on a lift and listened to it run. The noise is coming from the "twice rebuilt" transmission in 3rd and 4th. Still getting a vibrating drive shaft. Will deal with that after I get through getting my money back from the shop who rebuilt my transmission. @$#&@$#!

So when you're changing the transfer case into the various positions, are the lockouts in the free position during all of this? From reading this, I gather they are. Forgive me if I'm wrong. Try engaging the lockouts and then try the transfer case and see if the noises are still there.
