Lining Up My U-Joints?
(66 M100, 240 with w/3spd)I did a lot of reading on this forum about drive-shaft noise, carrier bearing, etc in order to isolate the noise that I 'feel' and hear in third gear above, say, 40 or so. I changed my carrier bearing as it was completely rotten, and I now notice the noise is more pronounced that ever.
As I've read that your u-joints have to be lined up and/or the shaft has to be placed just so...my question is how do I do this? Is it simply a matter of disconnecting at the splines and lining up all of the joints?
Are you sure all 3 U-jiont's are spinning free???
Now on my 62 GMC when i changed the Middrift bearing it now has a slight vibration from 25mph-33mph then it goes away....
More then likely you have to have your shaft reblanced to cure this .....
Now on my Dodge the rear jiont at the Diff was frozen lockedup ecty. witch cause the mid drift bearing to go out. once i replaced the "center suportbearing" ( they have many names for this part) it vibrated really bad once i'd hit 40-45mph thas when i found out my rear u-jiont was not moving.. so i replaced it and the vibration went away....
Now I do have a 77 F-350 that the mid drift locked up on me in a yard the truck wouldn't move as the drive shaft was binding...
I would First yank the drive sjaft and check all jiont's if you haven't done this yet..
Then i would grease then up really good drive it while see what it dose..
then maybe rebalence the drive shaft...
some time's it's just easyer to let it break then it is to try and track it down...
i have a good $275 into trying to find the vibration in my dodge i have put new u-jiont's new wheel's and tires, new front wheel bearing's a total front end alinment... I've done every thing sept for replace the Engine and transmission..
I'd go and do what this fine fella's have listed above then if it continues i'd just drive it. cause you don't want to have like $800 invested into every thing else to just find out it was your tranny or somthing...
keep trying keep driving ....
